The Trump administration has launched a new hiring program, U.S. Tech Force, to bring skilled technology professionals into federal service. Unlike most government jobs, the program does not require a college degree or prior work experience, but candidates must show strong technical skills.

Participants, called “fellows,” can earn $150,000 to $200,000 for two-year positions at various federal agencies, according to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). The initiative aims to fill roughly 1,000 positions in engineering, AI, data science, and other technology-driven roles.

OPM Director Scott Kupor highlighted the program’s dual benefit: advancing national technology priorities while offering participants valuable career opportunities in both public service and the private sector. He said the program lets participants work on important government projects and gain valuable career experience.

Fellows will work in departments like Defense, Treasury, State, Energy, and the IRS, handling projects like app development and data updates. Over two dozen top tech companies will offer training, guidance, and possible job opportunities after the program.

Applications are now open, with the Office of Personnel Management reviewing resumes and technical skills before agencies make final decisions. The administration plans to have the first group of fellows on board by March 2026.

U.S. Federal CIO Gregory Barbaccia described Tech Force as a team of “the nation’s best tech professionals, working to strengthen the government’s technical capabilities and secure its future in technology leadership.”

Some critics have raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest and overlap with previous programs, but the administration sees Tech Force as an important step in ensuring the government has the technical talent it needs.
