Background
Tescan Group has announced the acquisition of FemtoInnovations and launched a new Laser Technology Business Unit (LT BU). The new unit will be headquartered at the University of Connecticut (UConn) Tech Park, marking a major expansion of Tescan’s capabilities in semiconductor, biomedical device manufacturing, and advanced research markets.
FemtoInnovations brings a proven ultrafast-laser platform that has already gained strong interest from global semiconductor and advanced manufacturing companies. Tescan said the acquisition will allow it to deliver complete workflows by combining laser micromachining with its imaging and analysis systems.
Tescan CEO Jean-Charles Chen said the move will help customers move faster from problem to insight, especially in failure analysis, sample preparation, R&D, and production workflows. The company plans to unveil the expanded portfolio at ISTFA 2025 in Pasadena, California.
FemtoInnovations Co-Founder Sina Shahbazmohamadi said the partnership will create new integrated solutions that push innovation forward and expand the possibilities for customers across high-tech industries.
The new Laser Technology BU will work closely with Tescan’s Electron Microscopy and Micro-CT divisions, with integrated workflows expected to roll out in 2026. A new FLAME Center (FemtoInnovations Laser Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering) will also be set up at UConn Tech Park to support R&D, applications, and rapid workflow development.
Tescan executives said the acquisition was driven by the strength of FemtoInnovations’ engineering team, the maturity of its laser platform, and a close cultural alignment focused on customer-driven innovation. UConn Tech Park leaders added that the partnership will support talent development and new industrial applications in semiconductors and biomedical technologies.
The deal deepens Tescan’s technology portfolio and positions the company for stronger growth across advanced scientific and industrial markets.
