Background:

South Telford is preparing for a significant regeneration push as Telford & Wrekin Council invites applications for an independent Chair to head the newly formed Pride in Place South Telford Neighbourhood Board. The successful candidate will help guide a £30 million investment programme focused on improving Woodside, Brookside and Sutton Hill over the next 10 years.

The funding includes £20 million from the Government’s Pride in Place scheme, topped up by a further £10 million from the Council, taking the total commitment to £30 million. The investment is intended to support visible short-term improvements while also backing longer-term projects that strengthen local communities, improve neighbourhood facilities and increase resident involvement in decision-making.

Council leader Councillor Lee Carter said the programme presents a rare opportunity to bring about lasting change in South Telford. He highlighted the importance of strong, independent leadership to keep local priorities at the centre of the work and to ensure different partners work together effectively. The Council, he added, will provide ongoing support to help the Board deliver meaningful results.

Telford MP Shaun Davies said the funding reflects close cooperation between the Council, the local community and central government. He noted that the focus is now moving from planning to action and encouraged people who care deeply about South Telford to consider applying and helping turn ideas into real improvements.

Woodside was chosen as one of the first areas nationwide to join the Pride in Place programme, which is aimed at long-term regeneration in communities facing the greatest challenges. The initiative seeks to enhance public spaces, strengthen local leadership and support sustainable development.

Following the appointment of the Chair, work will begin to establish the full Neighbourhood Board. This group will bring together residents, councillors, the local MP, schools, health partners, community groups and businesses. Initial priorities will include shaping a 10-year plan, delivering early projects and setting up long-term arrangements for community-led leadership and funding.

Expressions of Interest close at 12 noon on Monday, 16 February, with interviews scheduled for later in the month.
